Do not wish for death but when calamity strikes and you cannot bear it, then say the Dua mentioned in the following Hadith
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "None of you should wish for death because of a calamity befalling him; but if he
has to wish for death, he should say: "O Allah! Keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and let
me die if death is better for me.' " [Sahih Bukhari]
Arabic of Dua
We all experience problems. Sometimes the problems become so difficult that we wish we were dead. Allah knew that we would experience such states. Hence, He had His Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) tell us a supplication we should say at such difficult times.
The supplication, as all the supplications of the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), is filled with lots of wisdom. Life may hold lots of good for us which we do not know about. By asking for death, and then having our supplication answered, we would die and miss out on all that good.
Instead, when we supplicate as the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said and as Allah (SWT) to keep us alive if life is good for us, we prevent ourselves from missing that good. Similarly, only Allah (SWT) knows if death is better for us as we may not do any more good in the life to come. Hence, when we say "let us die if death is better for me" we are saving ourselves from a life which may do us more harm than good.

Arabic of Dua
اللَّهُمَّ أَحْيِنِي مَا كَانَتِ الْحَيَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي، وَتَوَفَّنِي إِذَا كَانَتِ الْوَفَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي
